Break up and Heart Ache Songs

First, no I am not breaking up with anyone...lol

I just started thinking about what some of my favorite break up/heart ache songs are. Weird list to compile but in my map of a mind, that's where it went...

In some point of our lives, we have experienced love loss/heart ache. Music is what will get you through that rough patch until you are healed. It just seems that sad/depressing songs go with this as you finally sit down and have yourself a great cry. There are also those songs where the words just perfectly fit your situation...

Here are a few that I have chosen for my playlist...

I'm starting with a lovely R&B group Mint Condition..Nothing Left To Say

This song tells the story of a love ending and you leave with nothing more to say,,

Next, you must add this one to the list...

The Cure - Pictures of You
When you’ve been staring at pictures of your ex for so long you actually start to have tangible hallucinations about said ex, that’s bad.

Yesterday - The Beatles
There's nothing like wanting to turn back time and undo the wrongs...sadly that isn't possible

Everybody Hurts - R.E.M - Absolutely devastating and heartbreaking song....

This is Our Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley
When you know it's over but you just want that last goodbye, embrace and to be able to walk away

John Legend - Everybody Knows
No relationship is peaches and cream...

These are just a few of many songs that fit this type of situation. Stay tuned, I am likely to make a part 2 :)

Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday or Miss Lady Day is one of my all time favorite singers.

I don't even know where to begin to express just how absolutely wonderful she was and how no one has ever come to close to her talent (in my opinion). You can just feel her heartache, longing, love and sadness in her songs.
I have a Sunday tradition which consists of Irish Tea and listening to Billie. My favorite day of the week. Just she and I.
She had a hard and difficult life at times and I can relate, maybe that is why I love her so much. Towards the end of her life, she lost her higher pitch voice due to smoking, age and drug use.
The haunting and raspy voice you hear on the Lady In Satin album just sums up her heart for me. Her voice wasn't were it used to be but she still have the love of music in her heart and soul, which is all that mattered. She could tell a whole story and let you feel her emotions in her music, that is pure talent

You can read all about her life here

There are just so many songs of hers that I adore and that are special to me. It was hard to just pick a few that I wanted to share. I tried to cover a span of years so that you could see just how beautiful her voice, soul and heart were...
The wonderful thing about Billie is she is just timeless...

First Song Miss Brown to You 1935

 God Bless The Child 1941
I'll Be Seeing You 1944

And last by not least...a song towards the end of her life. Here you can listen to how her voice changed and this song just breaks my heart. You can feel the heartache of how much her life changed her. The sorrow, disappointments and broken heart.

I'm A Fool To Want You 1958 - This song took so many takes but it is the classic example of jazz and blues that will move your soul and break your heart at the same time

Glad Ghosts

Wow, I lucked upon this via NoiseTrade...

I listened to a couple of songs and was instantly hooked to his voice..I love when a musician can do that with their poetry of lyrics..I highly encourage you to give him a listen and buy his album :))

I couldn't find much information about this singer but this is his debut album even though he has been singing for about 10 years.

This was on his musician Facebook page "Gentry and I'm a musician who is from Springfield, Missouri that is now residing in KC, Mo. I'm excited to release the first record for Glad Ghosts which is titled "The Loudest." I have been writing/playing music for 10 years now and decided that I had enough songs to get a record out there. This is something that I have been wanting to do for a long time and I am very happy that it is finally here."

I chose the song "Let Me Love You" It is such a heartfelt plea and well written poem for love. I can't wait to see what other magical and beautiful songs he has in store for us.

Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol is one of those bands that I just don't ever remember not liking...

They have a lot of albums out with a lot of great songs..Most everyone knows the insanely popular Chasing Cars, which is great.

What if The Storm Ends is my absolute favorite song of theirs...It's just the music combined with his voice that makes this a perfect song. Plug it in your ear and enjoy :)

Lyrics
What if the storm ends and I don't see you
As you are now ever again?
The perfect halo of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against the planet's last dance

Just for a minute the silver-forked sky
Lifts you up like a star that I will follow
But now it's found us like I have a found you
I don't wanna run, just overwhelm me
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsty.com/snow-patrol-what-if-this-storm-ends-lyrics.html ]
What if the storm ends? At least that's nothing
Except the memory, a distant echo I won't pin down
I've walked unsettled rattle cage after cage
Until my blood boils

I wanna see you as you are now
Every single day that I am living
Painted in flames, a peeling thunder
Be the lightning in me that strikes relentless

What if the storm ends and I don't see you
As you are now ever again?
The perfect halo of gold hair and lightning
Sets you off against the planet's last dance

Just for a minute the silver-forked sky
Lifts you up like a star that I will follow
But now it's found us like I have a found you
I don't wanna run, just overwhelm me

Ave Maria (Schubert) - Two Different Versions

Ave Maria (Schubert)

Oh where to begin with this song...it is one of my most beloved songs and I always play this one at Christmas. Well, I play it a lot actually. I am more of a lover of how it was meant to be heard, in a church setting..

Being of the Catholic faith, this song has special meaning in the church. It is most always played at weddings and at times Midnight Mass. You do not have to be of Catholic faith to enjoy this beautiful song...

"The original words by Sir Walter Scott are detailed below and include many references to the Latin "Ave Maria" prayer. This, no doubt, inspired an unknown person to fit the Latin "Ave Maria" prayer text to Schubert's notes, and it almost succeeds with a couple of exceptions. The adapted Latin words of Ave Maria prayer ( Hail Mary ) is now the version most commonly performed with the music of Schubert."

Lyrics

Ave Maria! Ave Maria! maiden mild!
Listen to a maiden's prayer!
Thou canst hear though from the wild,
Thou canst save amid despair.
Safe may we sleep beneath thy care,
Though banish'd, outcast and reviled -
Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer;
Mother, hear a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!

Ave Maria! undefiled!
The flinty couch we now must share
Shall seem this down of eider piled,
If thy protection hover there.
The murky cavern's heavy air
Shall breathe of balm if thou hast smiled;
Then, Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer;
Mother, list a suppliant child!
Ave Maria!

Ave Maria! stainless styled!
Foul demons of the earth and air,
From this their wonted haunt exiled,
Shall flee before thy presence fair.
We bow us to our lot of care,
Beneath thy guidance reconciled;
Hear for a maid a maiden's prayer,
And for a father hear a child!
Ave Maria!

I am posting two videos of this beautiful song, one sung in opera

And the other by Andre Rieu - she gives me chills for sure

Lex Land

Every once in a while, you just happen to luck upon a song that "fits" your life in this moment. It took me a while to find this sweet gem after hearing it on Castle.

It's named My Fault, Your Mistake by the uber talented Lex Land

"Alexa Holland (born December 25, 1986), better known by the stage name Lex Land, is an American singer-songwriter based out of Austin, TX. Her debut album was released on March 25, 2008 and is titled Orange Days on Lemon Street] Her music was featured in TV shows such as Castle and One Tree Hill.
She is also the daughter of Dexter Holland, leader singer of the American punk-rock band The Offspring. -Wikipedia"

Lex's voice is so soothing and haunting paired with the music in this song, I know why it quickly became one of my favorites.

Just listening to the song and reading the lyrics, she is writing this song to her father about how un-perfect their relationship is, how she is letting him know she is making her own mark on the world...

You gave me good steps to follow
and I wish I could fill your shoes.
I wish the apple fell closer to the tree.
You gave me a branch to perch on
but it's time for me to take control.
This isn't about you, just gotta try life on my own.

And when I see fathers proud and smiling
I choke from shame and grief,
and only wish I could be a source for your relief.
We've both done each other so much wrong.
I've made mistakes too big to fix.
And maybe regardless of what I want,
we just don't mix.

And if you knew about my songs
maybe this would mean something to you.
The only thing I care about,
the only thing I wanna do,
the only thing that sets me apart,
the only thing that makes me me....

Slowly spelling out my heart,
for everyone to read.

And I'm sorry that I hurt you,
and I'm sorry that I let you hurt me,
but your little girl
is gonna change the world.
You'll see...

you'll see.

I believe in music

Sleeping At Last  Check out the website here

There are musicians that you like and then there are musicians that you absolutely fall in love with. Sleeping At Last happens to be one of those for me.

Sleeping At Last started out as an indie rock band that was originally formed in 1999.
Eventually two of the band members left leaving Ryan O'Neal, whose who had a major label released in 2003 called “Ghosts.”
On July 15, 2010 the band announced via their website that starting on October 1, 2010 until September 1, 2011 they would be releasing three songs on the first day of each month for one year, a project they named Yearbook. The songs were released on their website in twelve separate EPs named after the month in which they were released (e.g. January, February, etc.). As of December 8, 2011, all 12 EP's became available in one Yearbook box set for $45.00.
Some of the bands songs have been featured on Private Practice and Grey's Anatomy. Ryan wrote a song for the Breaking Dawn Part 1 soundtrack "Turning Page". Ryan is very involved in the project TWLOA.

Sleeping At Last has long been a beacon shining brightly on behalf of independent artists. In the ever-changing climate of the music industry, the quest for a successful independent career seems evermore difficult to attain. O’Neal pursues this challenge relentlessly through his commitment to musical integrity in his songwriting, and in this way nurtures a unique and personal relationship with his listeners. He has remained true to the things that brought him to music in the first place: his love of melody and the power of words. His music and lyrics emerge from a place that is honest and raw, asking every question that occurs and promising no fast, sure answers, but somehow always offering hope as the consistent, overarching theme.

I am going to post a few of my favorite songs by them. O'Neal's songwriting paired with his haunting music just does something to move that piece in your heart and soul in a beautiful way. I hope that you grow to love this band as much as I do....

Be sure to pick up his Christmas Collection 2012 album for free Here

This one is my absolute favorite as the lyrics seem to fit a part of my life that most have not yet experienced...

"Smartest thing I've ever learned is that I don't have all the answers...."

Matthew Mayfield

Oh, Matthew Mayfield, he reminds me of Dave Matthews (voice),

Matthew's Bio    <-----click link to his website

I am going to post the following song

Take What I Can Get

This song truly gives me goosebumps and to me,From what I understand, Matt's writing it about from the point of view of a person who's been seeing spending time with someone for a while. They feel they're being used and almost have no hope of being anything other than just an every once in a while thing. When it's convenient for the other person. He has come to terms with it and for the moment, will just take what he can get....

Lyrics
If finders were keepers, I’d still be at home
Take it or leave it, I'll show you the ropes
When you no longer see me I’ll be gone
So much for answers, I don’t have a clue
I can hear ya, you’re calling from outside my room
You’re still locked inside me, holding on

So I take what i can get
So I take what i can get
I’ll break out your windows, I don’t need a key
Show me your doubts and I’ll make you believe
Yeah, you’re still here to haunt me
You ain’t gone
So I take what I can get
So I take what I can get

If you are coming home
I’ll be out on my own
I don’t need you
To give me back the open wounds
But if you start to shed your skin
Naked heart – wearing thin
When you call
I’ll be here, once again

Jeremy Current

Let me take a moment to introduce you to Jeremy Current in case you haven't heard of him. Wow, what a truly talented and glorious musician.

"Jeremy Current  is an American songwriter, musician, and band leader. He has released two records, including his most recent Dark Land of the Sun in April 2011. He recorded his newest record Dark Land of the Sun at Skaggs Place Studios in Hendersonville, TN in January 2011. The album was co-produced by Current and Luke Skaggs. It features performances by Ricky Skaggs, The Whites, and Grand Ole Opry pedal steel player, Tommy White. The record was engineered and mixed by Grant Harding. Creative Loafing praised Current for his "solid songwriting and lyrical content and the perfect voice for its delivery." -Wikipedia

I discovered him totally by accident while browsing  http://noisetrade.com/,
Check out that lovely site where it is legal and free to download music from the artists themselves...

I will introduce you to one of my favorite songs by him so far...

Little Moon

This is a fan made video (by me). I couldn't find a video for this song and I wanted to share it with others.
I hope that you enjoy it and it moves your soul too

Music is Good for the Heat and Soul

I gave this blog the name between the headphones and the heart for this: I have found that no matter what is going on in my life, I can find a song to fit the mood...

Whether it be Billie Holiday for a little sadness or downtime to Paloma Faith for an upbeat, feeling great moment. Musicians pour out their heart and soul into their songs and I feel lucky that I am able to let it move both of mine...

Music has a way of touching your soul and at times it will make you do the following: laugh, cry, dance, smile, sing and remember a moment in your life.

I love to discover new music or even have an artist I have enjoyed for a long time to share with friends. There is nothing better to me than to share my love of music with my friends. I also love when they share their music with me. It's a great thing...

So, I hope that you find something you like here. I love all types of music from classical, jazz, pop, alternative, indy, to rock...

Plug in your earphones and have a listen or two...
